Pouya Pourebrahim (b.1986, Iran) is a multi-disciplinary artist whose career spans cinema, photography, and graphic design. Pouya began their artistic journey at 19 in the Iranian film industry as an assistant director. In 2006, they won the Best Film award at the International Roshd Film Festival for their debut short film.
Before immigrating to Canada in 2014, Pouya’s work extended beyond cinema into photography, resulting in exhibitions like These Wonderful Glasses and ElectroGesture in Tehran. Their graphic design practice led to the publication of a collection of graphic poetry, For Eve, If I Became Adam One Day (2011).
In 2018, Pouya earned a degree in VFX from Capilano University, showcasing their versatility in graphic design, trailer creation, and music videos. Pouya also explored the stage through theatrical performances and interactive installations, including participation in the Iranian Summer Festival in Vancouver (2019).
While their pre-pandemic work largely centered on collaborative social initiatives, the isolation of COVID-19 sparked a shift in their practice. In search of personal solace, Pouya began experimenting with recycled cardboard and staples, creating voluminous abstract sculptures and wearable art. This unique approach combines creativity with sustainability, marking a new chapter in their artistic evolution.
